• December 31, 2008 is fast approaching! Now is the time for some last minute tax planning to minimize your taxes for 2008.

• Beginning with year ends ending in 2008, small business corporations will enjoy even lower income tax rates on income eligible for the small business deduction. Stay tuned for updates in my tax tips section.

• The following expenses are deductible if they are paid before the end of the year: * moving expenses, *child care expenses, *safety deposit box fees, *charitable donations, *political contributions, *medical expenses, *alimony, *union and professional dues, *interest and carrying charges, *transit passes and fitness amounts for children.

• Businesses should purchase capital assets before the end of the year to get the most out of the "half-year rule" depreciation right off in the current year.

• If you are planning to sell stocks that you have lost money on, sell them before December 31 and use the losses to offset against any capital gains you've had in the current or past three years. (Make sure the settlement date on the sale falls in the current year!)

• November 30, 2008 is the deadline for filing corporate income tax returns with a May 31, 2008 year end. Filing by this date will avoid late-filing penalties. There's still some time.... give me a call or fill out my contact form.
